SKD Treasure Hunt | Location 6
Clue: “: I’m round and I’m small, with a roof of green, I’m like no building you’ve ever seen. Turn your back on me and look where you’ve been before. You’ll see the bridge, reach down below and you’ll find what you’re looking for”
Did you know…?
St Katharine Docks is named after St Katharine Hospital, which was an infirmary for the poor, founded on this very spot in 1147 by Queen Matilda.
Queen Matilda was the cousin of King Stephen of England (1092 – 1147). By rights, Matilda should have been the first female monarch of England and she very nearly was. Although she fought her cousin fiercely for 19 years for her title, England wouldn’t see a queen for another 400 years when Mary Tudor was officially crowned in 1553. Queen Mary famously sent her half-sister Elizabeth to the Tower of London, just a short walk away from here. A few years later, Elizabeth became Elizabeth I – one of England’s longest reigning monarchs for 44 years.
