SKD Treasure Hunt | Location 2
Clue: “Big and bold, from days gone by, I’m the grandad of the mini computer that’s always on hand, but I am firmly fixed to the land. Hardly used but always here to see, you can still call on me in an emergency”
Did you know…?
The General Post Office introduced telephone boxes in 1921 and the famous red telephone box to the streets of Britain in 1924. At its height the GPO network totalled 92,000 public call boxes.
Then in 1985, Britain’s first mobile phone call was made 1st January and two weeks later it was promoted here at St Katharine Docks by famous comedian Ernie Wise for BT Cellnet, the precursor to today’s O2 network. As mobile phones became more popular over the past few decades, the red telephone box has become redundant but 8,000 still survive on the streets of Britain today as an iconic reminder of our analogue days.
