The London Commodity Exchange
Just one month before the infamous ‘Black Monday’ of 1987 (19th October) which saw international stock markets crash unexpectedly; the new London Commodities Exchange opened in the building now called Commodity Quay. In a nod to the historical imports seen at SKD during its time as a commercial dock, soft commodities included products such as coffee, grain and sugar all of which were traded for the first time under one roof here at the Docks.
The World Trade Center
Next door to the new LCE stood a former London branch of the World Trade Center. It operated as part of the World Trade Center’s Association until the offices were moved to South Quay, Canary Wharf in 1991. It too played a role directly related to the operations of this historic dock; bringing together governments and industry to forge trade between the world’s nations.
Tower Bridge House
The building which housed the London WTC was demolished to make way for what is now Tower Bridge House. Designed by one of the UK’s greatest architect firms, Richard Rogers & Partners, the commission began in 1987 following the completion of the firm’s Lloyds of London building nearby on Lime Street and opened in 2005.
